STUART BRAYSON INTERVIEWED FOR METRO – FROM HERE TO ETERNITY

15 January 2019

From Here To Eternity is the perfect mix of heroes and hula

An atmosphere of high tension, exhaustion and excitement pervades London’s Shaftesbury Theatre. The opening night of Tim Rice’s latest musical, From Here To Eternity, looms. The mood, says the producer and lyricist, is ‘frantic’. ‘I don’t enjoy any of it,’ he laughs ruefully. ‘But it’s always like this.’ Rehearsals – and rewrites – are continuing up to the wire. In the stalls, director Tamara Harvey tells me the long hours mean it’s been days since she has communicated with her husband other than via text message. ‘At least you have a husband,’ interjects choreographer Javier de Frutos. ‘When do I have time to find one?’ Honed and perky, Darius Campbell – recording artist and talent show veteran – saunters by in khakis to take his place among the 33-strong company on stage.

The classic James Jones potboiler that the musical is based on is set on a US military base in Hawaii, just before the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Some of the performers march in formation, others leap between benches and army cots or tussle in meticulous fight sequences.
